Grey topper

As I write this, this grey sweater is hanging in the give away closet. Purchased in March 2014 on sale for 10.70 USD, it's gotten at least 13 documented wears, about 0.82 cents per wear. It was a favourite but began to pile. It's traveled extensively in South America, here are 10 of its wears.

Why it does not work

I give a lot of thought to closet editing.
Maybe more than I should.

One of the things I take into consideration before giving a garment away
is how many times I have worn it.
Thanks to the blog, I can now track that.

For example, this shirt from Charlotte Russe, which I purchased on line and
which I gave away last month.

I remember when I bough it, I loved the pattern and also the
tassel detail on the sleeves and on the bottom.

I bought it for about 25.00 USD plus shipping.

This was about 4 or 5 years ago...
Worn over the last 3 years only 4 times,
however I never loved how it looked.

Nov 2012                              03.07.2011                                          02.11.2009

It was only last month when I wore it last that I stopped
to look back at how it had been worn.

It was not easy to wear as I found it difficult to combine
with any other color than brown or blue jeans.

The elastic band was placed in the middle - but their middle was not
my middle, so it just looked off and I usually tugged on it all day long.

A garment that needs constant adjusting is
not something you want in your closet.

Hopefully the lesson I learned here is that nothing with an elastic in the middle
will look flattering on me, also I need to double think clothes purchases on line.

What are your do's and don'ts when it comes to buying clothes ?

Are there any particular items you stay away from ?

My 2011 closet edits

I originally started my "Closet Edit" posts sometime
in mid 2010.

Unlike many people I know who sit down once a year
and just turn their closet upside down and at the end have
6 black trash bags full of goodies...

Well, I do it every month.
Just a few pieces at a time.

I continue giving clothes a chance and usually wear them one last time before letting go.
Turns out this has allowed me to experience some hideous outfits
which end up convincing me that they garment has to go.

It`s 2012 and I thought I'd look back at what left my closet in 2011:

I got rid of 25 pairs of shoes.

I gave away 25 tops
(this includes t shirts, tanks, button downs, jackets, cardigans..)

11 bottoms (shorts, bermudas, jeans, trousers)

3 Belts left my closet.

7 Bags found a new home.

4 dresses

Various accessories: pendants, necklaces, earrings

I have no regrets (so far!) of the clothes, shoes, accessories that I have let go.

I plan to continue editing.

So, tell me about your edits...

December Editing

Even though its a crazy month, there is always time for a closet edit.
If you take a quick glance at your closet you will always find something that needs to go... like these:
Calvin Klein grey, cream and black wedges: Not comfortable and they're scuffed.

Christian Siriano for Payless brown heels: the thin brown material began to peel off and then the sole came apart from the shoe. It is a true shame because these shoes are awesome.
Well, were awesome.

I also let go of my white sandals by Ettiene Aigner.
I remember when I got these about 5 years ago in Virginia.
At first I felt a little like a nurse in white shoes and then they grew on me and I got a lot of wear out of them until I decided that they were scuffed and I really don't wear them anymore.

I also let go of 2 black bags..
My Roberto Cavalli bag: it began to fall apart.
Black patent bag from Neiman Marcus: it was overworked and the bottom was scuffed.

Grey black Croquet Club capris / pedal pushers: Cut me off in the wrong place
and I have only worn them twice in almost 3 years.

Nathalie B. pink striped capri / pedal pusher blazer suit.
There are several reasons I am letting go of this suit:
1. The bottom is low cut.
2. They hit my leg in an odd place - I already had them altered and
they still didn't work.
3. The stitching on the back of the blazer stretched and then tore.
4. Only worn twice in almost 3 years.

My colorful animal print also took a hike.
Worn once in three years, makes no sense to keep this
Essentials by Milano top.
Certainly hope that someone can get a lot more wear from it !

My white button down shirt  by Ketchup.
I adore this shirt, have worn in on the blog at least six times.
But keeping whites white is not simple and this white
button down is no exception.
The collar area seemed to be stained, I am guessing from perfume...
so and I am just letting go.

Also worn about 6 times on this blog, is my Luciano Dante bow top.
It's another item I also love but the fabric has thinned out and the
elastic at the waist has lost its grip - so off it goes.

 So, how about you ?
Have you done any closet edits in December ?

November edits

Whenever I chose to remove a garment from my closet
I give myself reasons.

My reason for getting rid of these Platinum brand culottes is
because I have only worn them twice in over 2 years.
I liked how they looked last time I wore them but
they were so difficult to style and I did not feel good in them.

I absolutely adore the rich green color of this top but everything else is wrong.
Its ill fitting and the neck area is just unflattering.
Worn only twice in the over two years on the blog- this month it is also time to say goodbye to my green Zara sweater.

2009                   2011

Ex-black (faded) tank top by Da Moda.

My "Killer Shoes" in the most realitic way BCBG.
They killed me last time I wore them, I cannot keep torturing my feet.
Besides they were worn less than 5 times in two years.

Lela Rose for Payless black peep toe shoes.
I have worn them very few times as you can see.
When I wear them it's like I am wearing diving fins.
They are big. Too big.

My Brazilian made black heels from ALAS.
I got a lot of wear from them but then I suddenly stopped wearing them.
I wore them a few days ago only to realize that they were scuffed.

My black Bandolino sandals are perfect on top but the
insole just fell apart. Besides, I don't really wear them that much...

So, what have you gotten rid of this month ?

October edits

It's that time of the
month again:
Here are my October closet edits.

One of the things I hate the most is going back
to an item that I have not worn for a while and falling back in love with it again, only discover that it has begun to fall apart.
It's like running into a friend that you love and had
not seen for a while and then telling them to go to hell.
Sigh.
This is the story of my black Breckelle's peep toes:

Then there are those like the ones below which were purchased
in Berlin a couple of vacations ago, that you just simply get tired of:

Then there are those items just shouting out "retirement":
My beloved Qupid animal print wedges.
They have been repaired so many times.
They have been around for about 4 years, but it's time to retire them.

Finally, a couple of tops:

White Da Moda tank top and white Da Moda ample collar shirt.
The tank is not that white anymore plus it has stains.
The button down shirt has been worn maybe twice in +2 years
and it just doesn't feel right.
Last time I wore it,
I tried it on with at least 8 different garments and nothing worked.

The Fariani top on the left, it was a gift and I only wore it twice in about 3 years.
Also my long green Younique button down is my only garment in this color
which is why I think I have kept it in my closet for so long.
I've had it for at least 4 years but don't wear it often and I have
never really loved it - so I find no good reason to keep it.

As I continue to purge my closet I find it's a problem for me to let go.
Why is it so difficult ?
