Friends who lie

I have a girl friend I've known for at least fifteen years. Sometimes she's been close, sometimes she drifts away but she is usually around.
The friends we have in common have always mentioned that she is a pathological liar.  I never paid much attention to it and just went along.
However a few weeks ago she called one evening and asked if I'd like to join her for dinner, so I did. She picked me up and we went to a new Italian joint.
We got a table and started talking and suddenly I realised that at least 80% of the things she was saying were not true. Worst was that it made no sense, she was lying with no apparent reason.
She lied about her job, about a guy she was supposedly dating, about shopping she had done, about things she said I said but I did not. I go to a point I did not know what to say.
Have you had to deal with compulsive liars? What are you supposed to do? Agree and pretend or just tell them off?

Wow, I can't even imagine how bizarre of a situation that must be. I think the way I would respond would really depend a lot on the level of my friendship with the person. If I really valued that relationship and wanted to try to salvage it I think I would raise the issue but stress that I found it hurtful to the friendship and that's why I wanted to discuss it. But if I didn't think the relationship was a big priority (and knowing that the person was probably going to be defensive and hurt no matter how I phrased it) I think I'd just be blunt and say that I didn't think I could remain friends and it was because I was troubled by the lack of honesty and just felt it was an unhealthy series of interactions. It's a real tough one!

That's a tough one! I've known people like that, and like your friend, everyone knows they're a liar. The sad thing is I don't think compulsive liars realize that they're constantly lying. I pretty much just take everything a person like that says with a grain of salt. On another note, I love the rainbow vintage top!

I really love this top - it's adorable on you.

Yikes, that's a really tricky situation - I'm lucky in that I haven't encountered anyone like that! I don't know what advice to give, but I couldn't keep someone like that in my life for very long...

Ah Lorena, how awkward that must've been for you. I was actually having the very same thoughts about a friend of mine that I know for 20 years, how weird! I can't believe people, sometimes you think you know somebody so well, but...
Great look though ;)n Love the rainbow top and suits you so well!

Love the rainbow top, especially with the black pants!

I have a friend who does things like that now and then - it's harmless so I don't call them out on it. Although sometimes when I'm incredulous at their story I can't help but show it, haha! They don't outright lie, more just embellish things a bit when they are retelling them. They have some pretty crazy work stories, but I'm sure it's not really as crazy as they say - or no-one would want to work there!

It's people like Belle Gibson you have to watch out for - as long as they aren't taking advantage of anyone like she did then I am still gonna be their friend.

I don't know about straight up liars, but I know a lot of people who love to embellish. There is always a thread of truth, but it's been blown out of proportion. It always annoys me, but I keep my mouth shut and deal with it. I don't think they can help it.
