5 things I learned from Jenna

I've expressed my girl crush on Jenna Lyons, former J. Crew Creative Director before. She wears what she likes and I like what she wears, as simple as that. I've read up on her and pinned several of her looks in my Pinterest Outfit Inspiration board. On the way, I've learned a few things from her, today I thought I'd share 5:

1. Identify your style signifiers and do not confuse it with a signature style.
That being said it's not a uniform, one of mine are sunglasses.

2. Don't divide your wardrobe.
This only sets boundaries and limits your own creativity. If you have an area in the closet for "work clothes" that's all they'll ever be: set them free. Mix them up. I confess that I wear my jeans to work with a structured Theory blazer and then wear them on the weekend to do gardening. I've worn the same long skirt to a formal wedding and also to the mall.

3. It's not about buying something new, it's about wearing it in a new way.
This is crucial for me as I love getting a low cost per wear, I also love being creative and blogs are an infinite resource of inspiration.... and they´re free ! Wearing things in a new way can mean you tie the cardigan to your waist and use it as an accessory or just wearing your top on backwards.

4. Don't ignore color.
It's intimidating, it´s not easy and it puts you on the map. Dare yourself to. I know I've done this and one of the best examples was buying and then wearing a pair of pink neon pants, wether they're trending or not..

5. It's all in the details.
What are you doing to wear something out of the usual ? Maybe its just buttoning the shirt collar, adding a brooch to your watch, a half tucked shirt or tying a vintage scarf to the belt loop. Something small that gives it a personal touch.

What's your take on this ?

So much good advice! I think I have figured myself out style-wise - and it keeps changing, which is fine too! That's a piece of advise I would add: You aren't the same person your whole life, and neither is your style! Don't be afraid to change, to try something new, to dress a new body shape (due to aging or weight), to wear something that you "couldn't wear".

All such great advice! I totally agree with the color. It used to scare me for whatever reason and now I just do it and love wearing many shades now!

Oh I was just commenting on Sheila's blog about needing to find something to wear backwards, how funny! :)

It's my dream to have a wardrobe where I don't have to have work and casual clothes separate. Should be easy to do with my workplace being so business casual! I need to streamline my wardrobe a bit more to get there though I think!

Hope you have a great weekend ahead of you! :)

These rules are very good! I fall all the rules but I think I can be better in wearing what I own already in a new way :) Thanks for this helpful post.

This is definitely the way to think! You confine yourself otherwise.

I used to divide my wardrobe between regular clothes and work clothes. But then I started working a job that didn't have a dress code, so then all my clothes became both work and non-work clothes. So I totally don't divide my closet anymore (except seasonally).

When I started my blog I feel like I was more adventurous with my style, and other bloggers were more about remixing old things than always buying new ones. Now I go on fashion blogs and have to read apologies if something they have on went out of stock before the post went up.

I always love that you still experiment and take chances and show off all they ways you've worn the same piece.

Great list!
I DO have a strong separation between my artmaking clothes and everything else. I DESPISE getting paint on my "good" clothes. I'm a sloppy painter and gave up the "paint spattered artist" look after college.

I love coming up with new combinations of my favorite garments -- it's like getting something new. Well, almost.
