The Six Month Rule

Whenever I read about closet cleaning and
clothes editing it always involves the 6 month rule.
I think its BS. If I followed that rule my closet would
be like totally empty. I bet yours too. In fact I do not
know anyone who actually sticks to that.

If I stuck to that rule, the trousers would
not be here today and the top would
have been given away 5 years ago.
Sure I'd love to free some space in the closet,
just not like that - besides, almost everything
in there I bought with my hard earned
money ...

So, the 6 month rule ?
I don't think so.

Do you follow the 6 month rule ?

I clean my closet at least each 6 month but don't give every away in this context :) I bought it as you already mentioned from my hard earned money ... How good you don't follow this rule as I love what you wear here!

I like the pink and burgundy together! :)

I don't follow the 6 month rule either - or with my recent pregnancies I'd have nothing left in my wardrobe, my weight's gone up and down and so not everything fit to get worn in 6 months!

I am thinking about trying the hanger trick(turning them all around, seeing what's unworn at the end of a year) when I'm fully back in my normal wardrobe - but as a guide, not as a strict rule for what should stay and what should go.

Nope, I don't follow that. I do the backward hanger trick, however, to evaluate what I'm wearing and what I'm not, and it does help me pass along items I've gotten tired of. I think the 6-month rule is good for someone whose closet has gotten out of control, just as a tool to help them see what is "dead" in their closets. I don't think it applies to those of us who are very conscious of what's in the closet.

Preach Lorena!
Nevermind that half my closet can't even be worn 6 months of the year, somethings I know I want and like, but just don't get worn terribly often. I tend to get very emotionally attached to things as well and yes, I spent a good deal of money on them, and I know even if try and consign I will only get back a few dollars of what I paid.

I do however think that the very popular bloggers, especially those with very popular Poshmark accounts follow the 6 month rule.

Hear, hear! While the see the merit and logic behind it, I don't usually live by it in the slightest either. I do like to give my closet a thorough once over periodically though and am more often to let go of pieces that haven't been worn for years, especially if I've never been wild about how they fit.
