Not Utilitarian

While reading the March 2015 of In Style Magazine I cam across
a term I had not heard in fashion before: "Utilitarian".

Utilitarian is defined as something serving a purpose, a uniform that
is practical for a job - an item that is "useful rather than attractive".
I automatically remembered that I had a garment that might fit the trend
even though it has not pockets or zippers… but it's got plenty of buttons !

It's my white My Michelle blazer.

Which I have described before as a restraining jacket
but which I also refer to as my astronaut jacket.
Black pencil skirt Apt. 9 - White jacket My Michelle -
Nude Sam Edelman heels  - Brown tote Madison Coach
I have to be honest about this garment, it
does not get any wear at all… so at the end
its not really "practical" and "useful" as utilitarian
is supposed to be…

Do you have any real utilitarian garments in your closet ?

That jacket is fun! But I fear it wouldn't get much wear in my wardrobe either, haha. I used to have a few pieces like that but slowly gotten rid of them through the years. But it is a trend I like

Your jacket reminds me of a chef's jacket for some reason! Maybe the white and the high neckline :)

I have a few trench coats that would fit this description, they certainly get a lot of wear in the winter months! :)

Haha, I'm not sure how utilitarian any of those items featured in that magazine spread are either!

While I try to keep my useful things attractive, I suppose my array of nude t-shirt bras fit the bill. But for someone who likes to wear sheer white for as much of the year as possible my lacy bra and brightly colored bra (yes, that is singular) tend to take a backseat.

You taught me something new Lorena! That jacket looks awesome on you. I love military and uniform looks.

Not a massive number, no, as I tend to like pieces that are colourful, involve patterns and/or are embellished to some degree. I'd say the closest things I have in this camp, aside from super basic shirts, might be my wide legged vintage style jeans and overalls, and I'm sure that even there, that wouldn't fall under most people's definition of utilitarian fashion. :)
