On Souvenirs..

Peach and gold brocade skirt Merona - Off white sweater Tommy Hilfiger -
Harriet tote bag See by Chloe - Isola flat burgundy bow shoes
There is one thing I have never understood and its when someone goes on a trip, let's say Paris and they bring you a souvenir its made in China.
Yes, I know you may think I am ungrateful and that it is the thought that counts, however in my head the idea of a souvenir is that it is uniquely from that place you just came back from. Hopefully its something made in the region and that its not easy to obtain anywhere else. I know that with the internet and online shopping this might be a difficult task..
Whenever I bring something back from a trip either for a friend or myself I make an effort for it to be unique. As it turns out its usually food, an artisan hand craft, hand made jewellery, a garment locally made or from a local brand and made in the country or even something vintage.
Today, for example I'm wearing a vintage hand painted Tsuji porcelain pin made in Argentina. I bought it at the San Telmo sunday market in Buenos Aires sometime in 2011.  I could have picked up a tshirt or a tote bag but I bought this home as a memento of the trip. Its local, its vintage and was quite affordable and now it's got a story ;)
How about you, what's your stand on souvenirs ?

  3. Oh it's a beautiful brooch! Reminds me of those fancy plates people display sometimes, the shape of it.

I tend to do food as a souvenir gift if it will comply with our customs laws (can't even take things across state lines in some cases). For myself though I don't always look out for locally made things, just something I will use and enjoy and that will remind me of my trip :)

  11. Great sunglasses!

My sis is a pro souvenir shopper - wherever she goes, she knows just the right thing to buy that is evocative of the place but not too cheesy. I on the other hand, usually end up empty-handed.

  12. Lorena, you are so funny! They probably don't take the time to look at the back to see if it's locally made. They just assume.

  13. Dear Lorena, I really love your wonderful skirt and this amazing souvenir you are wearing! Souvenirs are a complexe theme in my case ... honestly I buy very seldom such things as I'm not sure if I still will like what I bought at home :)

  14. I never bring back souvenirs for people -- but I have my reasons for that. But if I did, I would definitely get something made in the actual country for sure. This pin you got from Buenos Aires is super unique.

  16. I am 100% with you! I don't see the point in buying something that was made in China, unless I was visiting china, or something I could easily buy on line or even in a store in my home town. When my sister and I were in california it was quite the struggle to find unique things and the only real souvenir I bought was a starfish ornament that was handmade in San Diego.

I think your vintage broach is quite lovely and in infinitely better than a tee or a tote!

  19. I do not like buying little stupid souvenirs, not exactly china's, all kind :) For me it rubbish the world. I prefer to buy sth to eat or sit and admire city, mountains, sea etc. This is the only value (remember it), not material things.
